“I love Western Australia. I love the biodiversity, our natural wonders, and the community I am part of. But I worry a lot about my future here – I don’t want to be living in a version of Western Australia that is still extracting gas until 2070. I don’t want to live in a state where the government is more concerned about the relationship it has with multinational, billion-dollar corporations than with what’s best for its own people.”
Those are the words of UWA Wildlife Conservation Student Sophie Burrows.
She’s a member of the UWA Student Guild Environment Department, who are leading a protest against Woodside’s North West Shelf and Browse on Wednesday.
The federal government continues to negotiate behind closed doors with Woodside on final conditions for the approval of the company’s North West Shelf gas extension.
This devastating project is the key component of Woodside’s Burrup Hub fossil gas mega-project, which will cause 6 billion tonnes of planet-warming emissions.
The Australian public were rightfully outraged by the North West Shelf approval — but we can’t let the scrutiny fade away while Woodside hold secret talks with government.
That’s why we’ll be out in force this Wednesday, to stand with uni students as they fight for their future.
